Dermatology as a specialty has seen exponential growth in the last decade. It is one among the top five branches preferentially sought by postgraduate aspirants. Among many other reasons, the growth of Aesthetic Dermatology backed up by the ever-growing cosmetic industry has contributed a great deal in this regard. While this subspecialty is enjoying freeway driving, many other subspecialties including Dermatopathology are stranded in a bottleneck traffic. Lack of training facilities in this subspecialty across the country and uncertainty of future career prospects in Dermatopathology may force many youngsters to focus on other fields of specialization.

Dermatopathology, as a subspecialty, is slowly but steadily making its presence felt. Despite having less than a handful of qualified Dermatopathologists in India, the subject is frequently discussed in many national conferences and dedicated seminars are being held at both national and regional levels. This has been possible because of the untiring efforts of senior Dermatopathologists who also seeded the initiation of Indian Journal of Dermatopathology and Diagnostic Dermatology (IJDPDD). IJDPDD has gradually and steadily made progress since its inception under the able stewardship of Dr. Sujay Khandpur.

In many institutions and laboratories, skin biopsy sections are read and reported by general pathologists. Although this working model is functional at present and may continue to do so in the years to come, a more desirable situation would be to have dedicated and trained faculty to do the job. A good rapport between the dermatologist and pathologist, fruitful case discussions, interdepartmental research done at institutional level and then replicated across centers in the country would be instrumental for the progress of Dermatopathology to loftier pinnacles in the times to come. Indian Association of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy has recently initiated a fellowship program in Dermatopathology, wherein selected dermatologists are partially supported for training in this core area at some of the best centers (of their choice) in the world. Hopefully, in the years to come, this will contribute to a good pool of trained Dermatopathologists who would in turn take the lead to mentor their young colleagues.

The next and biggest challenge for the journal will be to move up the indexing ladder. The road ahead is not easy; however, with your support, we shall conquer it together. Support us by submitting your quality work. Let us join hands for the win-win situation; your outstanding work gets good visibility and citations through the journal, and the journal would benefit from publishing top quality research.

IJDPDD is a tender and delicate plant, which needs to grow and mature as a tree, deeply rooted and spread its branches far and wide. For this to happen, it requires your constant support and guidance. This could be done in the capacity of an author, reviewer, or as a member of advisory board. Your constructive criticism is what will take the journal to greater heights and help realize its potential. Hence, please do not hesitate to write to us; you may do so by dropping a mail to ijdpdd@gmail.com.
