Dear Friends,
I welcome you to the first issue of IJDPDD. This journal is a sincere attempt to generate interest among clinicians and diagnosticians in the field of dermatopathology and diagnostic dermatology.
Dermatology, like other medical fields, has made huge progress in the Indian subcontinent in the past decade. Technological advancement and easy access to sophisticated equipments have widened the diagnostic armamentarium of the clinician. In fact, diagnostic modalities have evolved over the years. The more invasive biopsies have given way to non-invasive tools such as dermoscopy/trichoscopy and confocal microscopy that can study the skin at near-histological resolutions, molecular techniques such as Southern blot, interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (iFISH), comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), etc., are being used as adjuncts to traditional methods, and genetic and electron microscopic analyses are now necessary supplements to conventional diagnostic modalities. Instruments have also been developed to precisely evaluate the color and redness of skin, its sebum and follicle content, and skin functions such as transepidermal water loss.
Hence, it became imperative that a journal be launched from India that focuses on this important aspect of dermatology. With more and more clinicians getting trained in this subject through fellowships in prestigious international and national institutes, they are now better equipped to use these techniques and offer prompt and precise solutions.
The launch of this journal has only been possible due to the concerted efforts and collaboration between the Dermatopathology Society of India and the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists, Karnataka Branch.
I am sure that with the launch of the first issue, more and more dermatologists, pathologists, and diagnosticians would contribute extensively and showcase their outstanding research work in future issues.
This is only the first step as the journey has just begun; several heights have to be scaled many territories have to be conquered. All this would not be possible without the efforts, guidance, and constant support of the readers and contributors.
